Milnerton
Golf Course
The
Course
Milnerton Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 72 seaside course
situated in a leafy suburb just 10 minutes north of the
city of Cape Town. Surrounded by natural beauty, the course
is a pleasure to the senses and a challenge to even the
most experienced golfer - especially when the prevailing
South Easter, affectionately known as the "Cape Doctor"
- makes her house calls in the summer months!
Nestled between the Atlantic ocean and the RietVlei river,
this lush links-type course is relatively flat with few
trees. But with the sea and the lagoon bordering most
holes, and the 7 beautiful water holes waiting to claim
the wayward shot, it offers a truly unique golfing experience!
Typical of many links-type courses, you will play the
first 9 holes out, enjoy a light meal at the halfway house,
and then return back to the clubhouse via the second 9.
The Attraction
On most holes, the sound of the waves breaking on the
shore just metres away will remain long after your game
is over. The spectacular view of Table Mountain from almost
every hole is breathtaking, while the nature lovers will
be thrilled at the abundance of water birds on the bordering
river.
The Reward
Once over, the day's experience will not be complete without
a well-deserved drink or two in the 5-star lounge situated
just a few paces off the beach. There you will relax in
comfort and reflect on your game while soaking in the
splendor of the view over the ocean toward the Mother
City - with Table Mountain completing a perfect post-card
setting.
The Evolution
Milnerton Golf Club (MGC) has evolved from a six-hole
course at its inception in 1913 into the world-class 18-hole
championship course that it is today. The 9 out,
9 in course is bordered by the Atlantic ocean on
the west and a lagoon on the east, and provides a golfing
experience unique to South Africa: Built on sea sand,
we believe we are the only true links course in Africa.
In 1995, MGC underwent a major facelift as a result of
the development of the Milnerton Links housing estate
on part of the course. Some of the original holes were
retained, while others were completely rebuilt. The new
layout, together with all its features, has proved to
be a huge success.
The Beauty
With its glorious and unobstructed views of Table Mountain
acting as a backdrop to unsurpassed beauty from most
holes, MGC is truly a wonderful gateway to the Fairest
Cape in all the World".
The Connections
The club took transfer of the land within a tripartite
agreement between the Milnerton Municipality and Graaff
Trust, which, in effect, transformed MGC members into
owners of the club. MGC also has strong parliamentarian
connections that include the Honorary President, Sir
David Graaff.
The Games
MGC has featured well in all the local WPGU leagues,
having won the Masters, Harry Solomon, the Challenge
and the Premier Stephan leagues on various occasions.
Competitions are well-supported and it is difficult
to accommodate visitors on weekends and Public Holidays.
Saturday is Members Day, with the clubs
group of loyal stalwarts, known as the "Sunday
School", taking over the 1st tee on Sunday mornings.
Wednesday afternoons are also extremely popular, so
advance booking is always advisable.
The PGA SA Masters Tournament was played at MGC in
December 1978 and each year thereafter until 1983. American,
Calvin Pete, once called it a Mickey Mouse Course
after shooting a record 63 to lead after a first day
of perfect conditions. The second round saw the Cape
Doctor taking exception to his comment - he shot an
83!
The Venue
A very popular family restaurant, Maestro's on the Beach,
is situated on the golf course premises. The club also
has its own caterer for golfers and social functions.
The lounge, which boasts one of the best views in Cape
Town, can be hired out for weddings, anniversaries and
parties, and can accommodate 100 people seated around
a dance floor.
