Humewood
Golf Club
Home to one of the world's most challenging links courses,
it is consistently ranked as one of South Africa's Top
10 golf courses. The late Bobby Locke considered Humewood
Golf Course to be the best in South Africa and said that
it compared favourably with the top links courses in the
British Isles. Humewood has hosted the South African Amateur
9 times and the South African Open 4 times.
Found in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth, the golf
course is a genuine seaside links frequently lashed by
the winds off Algoa Bay.
On the first Wednesday of every month the club encourages
visitors to come and play this magnificent course by inviting
them to play in the club competition at the members rate
of R30.00 including competition fee. After your round
relax in the 19th hole with awesome views overlooking
the course and out to sea.
With wide and undulating fairways, fast greens and
thick coastal bush - a round is a must for any golfers
visiting South Africa. For those wishing to mix business
with pleasure, Pine Lodge Resort & Conference Centre
is just minutes away, which offers first class conference
facilities and accommodation.
The course boasts a variety of animal life with an abundance
of plovers otherwise known as "kiewietjies",
one of which makes up the club's emblem. And after your
round of golf; relax at the "19th" in the elegant
club house and indulge in an spectacular view over the
links course itself and Algoa Bay.

FRONT NINE - some of the
more challenging holes include:
HOLE 3 (Men - par 3 - 198m and Women - par 3 -
164m)
A long par 3. A driver may be required if a strong
easterly is blowing. Narrow green.
HOLE 4 (Men - par 4 - 393m and Women - par 5 -
351m)
Bends slightly left off the tee requiring a draw to
avoid 2 fairway bunkers on the right. Elevated and
elongated green protected by three bunkers.
HOLE 6 (Men - par 3 - 130m and Women - par 3 -
120m)
Shortest hole on the course regarded by many as Humewood's
signature hole. Elevated green, narrow and long. Protected
by four bunkers. Prevailing wind blows across the
hole making it a difficult tee-shot. It is said that
Bobby Locke once used a putter off the tee to defy
the cross-wind with a low shot along the ground.
BACK NINE - some of the
great holes on this nine include:
HOLE 13 (Men - par 4 - 408m and Women - par 5 -
356m)
Truly a great championship golf hole and has been
described as one of the greatest par 4's in the world
by Stuart Mclean in his book, South African Golf Courses
- A Portrait of the Best. For the men, it is not only
extremely long into the wind but the fairway is seriously
undulating. Add to this a narrow entrance to an elevated
green hidden behind a sandy hill with a waste area
of sand and rough on the right and a steep bunker
to the left. Immediately behind the green is very
thick bush! South African professional Hendrik Buhrmann
is on record as taking 14 shots to hole out here.
HOLE 16 (Men - par 4 - 277m and Women - par 4 -
256m)
Tight and short with thick coastal bush on both sides.
The green falls away to the bunkers, one on the left
and the other on the right. Usually played safe with
an iron off the tee with some exceptions! Ernie Els
used a driver here and found the green on his way
to winning the Goodyear Classic in 1992.
HOLES 11, 15 and 17 (Par 5's for men and women)
Great par 5's with the 11th and 15th offering birdie
chances downwind, there can be some danger though!
The 17th is a long hole usually played with a cross-wind.
It is the closest hole to the sea offering a magnificent
view across the Bay.
