Arabella
Country Estate
The Arabella Estate, originally known as "Laughing
Waters", began as a barley farm and is an area designated
a "World Biosphere", and earmarked to become
a "World Heritage" site. Maintaining a balance
between man and nature was foremost in the development
of the Championship Golf Course on the "Beautiful
Land", with its rolling, undulating terrain.
The course was awarded the Golf Digest award for the best
new course in South Africa in 1999. In 2002, the course
was rated number 9 in South Africa by Golf Digest and
number 5 in 2003. Arabella Golf Club was awarded the Compleat
Golfer Five Star award in 2003.
The design challenge was headed by the renowned architect
Peter Matkovich. His undoubted success has resulted in
a course that compliments the environment without disappointing
the golfer, whether expert or amateur. The challenge and
majesty of the course should prove irresistable to the
wider golfing fraternity. Of course you'll have more time
to practice. - Challenging enough to bring you back for
more, enjoyable so you won't want to leave.
The course was completed during December 1999 and Peter
Matkovich has ensured the 18 holes encompass the Mountain
backdrops, lagoon frontage and forests on the estate.
These provide for links, parkland and coastal aspects,
while the individual fairways provide natural corridors
as vantage points to savour nature's true beauty. The
challenge of finding the wide fairways is set by hungry
bunkers, thirsty water hazards and lagoon, and emphasized
by the magnificent "dominant bent grass" greens.
The Arabella Country Estate lies on the south-western
coast of South Africa, 110 kilometres from Cape Town.
It is accessible via the N2 over Sir Lowry's Pass or via
a scenic coastal drive that passes through Gordon's Bay,
Betty's Bay and Kleinmond. Both routes provide views that
serve as ideal preparation for the visual feast that Arabella
has to offer.
Despite it's size (112 hectares) the Estate does not
evoke any feelings of remoteness. Stand at its core
and take a deep breath. To one side are the foothills
of the Kogelberg mountains. To another is the shore
of the Bot River lagoon. And all around is splendour. The
area is home to over 1 200 different species of wild
flower, species that are exclusive to this Cape region.
And while other areas do have beaches, none are this
close to perfection.
Greens
Dominant Bent Grass Greens.
