Plettenberg
Bay Golf Club
Plettenberg Bay Country Club has an 18 hole golf course
set in a private nature reserve. The highly rated course
is a very popular tourist destination. the course is easy
to walk, the 2 main inclines can be observed from the
veranda. Visitors are welcome. Lush Kikuyu grass fairways
and bayview greens recently over seeded to bent grass
provides golfers with an excellent playing surface on
this park like golf course. Despite intense competition
from the beautiful white beaches and rolling surf, the
club is busy and booking is essential.
All those holidaymakers who regard the Plettenberg
Bay golf course as just another seaside course will
be pleasantly surprised. All the greens have been built
to USGA standards. The shapes and slopes of this course,
together with the bunkers and water hazards present
a challenging, yet beautiful course. The course is well-maintained
and playable 365 days of the year.
The Parkland Course has no intrusive houses or traffic
noise and is populated mainly with indigenous flora
and fauna.
The natural beauty of the course has been carefully
retained. Monkeys, birdlife like the Knysna Loerie and
woodpeckers as well as the occasional deer are more
likely to put you off your game.
Course
Watch out for the stroke 1, par-four 16th. Accuracy
when teeing off is important to avoid your ball ending
up in the bushes on the left. The green is well protected
by bunkers and a stream that crosses the fairway.
The 470-metre par-five 4th hole plays particularly
long in a southeaster when the average golfer will have
little chance of reaching the water-guarded green in
two, and sometimes even in three.
By contrast the 11th is only 110 metres long, one of
the shortest par-threes in the country. The 300-metre
par-four 14th is a sharp dogleg-left which features
two tall oak trees which are on the left-hand side of
the fairway just after the hole curves towards the green.
The foliage makes the drive an exacting one.
