Randpark
Golf Club
Situated in the western suburbs of Johannesburg, the Randpark
Golf Club boasts the largest membership in South Africa.
The club consists of two courses: Randpark Golf Club and
Windsor Golf Club. The Windsor Golf club, which has existed
since 1941, became the Randpark Golf Club when the land
adjoining it to the north was acquired and another 18-hole
course was developed on it. The new Randpark course and
Randpark Clubhouse were opened in 1971. The club has hosted
the SA Open on two occasions.
The massive clubhouse that caters for both courses
is well equipped with three function facilities, a boardroom,
two halfway houses and five bars, as well as an excellent
pro shop.
Both courses are similar since they are in close proximity
to each other. The well-wooded parklands design contains
a mix of kikuyu fairways and bents greens. Both courses
are well maintained with plenty of sand traps and water
hazards.
Course
The Randpark golf course, the clubs flagship
course, is a championship course that has many challenging
holes passing through undulating terrain. Most of the
greens are raised and require high lofted pitches so
that the ball sticks on these lightning putting surfaces.
Large bunkers found around the greens will punish inaccurate
approach shots.
Randpark golf course mixes it up and is a great test for
both the club golfer and pro alike. Long hitters will
be able to reach the par-four 3rd in two; at 403m this
hole doglegs right while bordering the perimeter fence.
Another interesting hole is the closing par-three 17th
stroke 8. At 190m this is a short hole to say the least.
This hole requires pinpoint accuracy playing downhill
over water to a raised green surrounded by bunkers. This
hole makes the bunkers the safest place to be.
