Erinvale
Golf Course
Erinvale, nestled at the foothills of the Helderberg and
Hottentot Holland Mountains in Somerset West, is one of
South Africa's great golfing challenges.
The Erinvale Golf Club is a private club where guests
of the Erinvale Estate hotel play as members. This Gary
Player designed 18 hole championship golf course has fast
become renowned throughout the golfing fraternity, both
locally and abroad. Erinvale hosted the 1996 World Cup
of Golf, where thirty two participating nations competed
and found the course both a golfing challenge and visual
delight.
Depending on the tees used, the course layout is both
a championship test and a playable course for the beginner.
Erinvale's scenic assets are abundant. A splendid backdrop
of mountains seems to virtually surround the Estate.
On the course are two different moods. The first nine
holes are built on flat terrain with challenging holes
made more difficult by strategic water hazards and an
array of different style bunkers. These range from traditional
large, well-shaped bunkers to some with railway sleepers
holding up steep, sandy slopes. Sod bunkers that are challenging
yet aesthetically pleasing complete the picture.
The second nine holes are on endulately high ground.
Here the scenic splendor might distract the players
from the continuing challenge. Again, water and bunkers
are the main features with the added test of sloping
lies.
Erinvale has a wonderful selection of testing par 4 holes
that could rank with the best in SA. The bent grass greens
and bunkering are especially impressive. A number of the
deep bunkers have steps leading into them, reminiscent
of those in Britain and Ireland.
The greens at Erinvale are huge and well-shaped allowing
for several different pin placements. A feature of the
layout is that different coloured flags tell you the
position of the pin, blue flags at the back, white in
the middle and red at the front. Erinvale is also a
real estate development where homes blend well into
the landscape.
