It's the national religion.
Transcending race, politics or language group, sport unites the
country.
The major sports in which South Africa excels are the aristocratic
British games of rugby and cricket. For close on a century, the country
has regularly fielded teams of world-beating class, playing chiefly
against arch-foes England, Australia and New Zealand. But it is football
(or soccer, as it is universally called here) that has won the hearts
of the countries black majority. |

Soccer World Cup 2010
"I feel like a young man of 15", Nelson Mandela joked after
South Africa was awarded the right to host the 2010 Football World
Cup. But, typically, his first thought was for others - the people
of rival bidders Morocco, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. "South Africans
should treat this decision with humility", Mandela said, "because
we are, after all, equal."
